Alternatives
The best Surfer alternatives in 2026 (honest picks)
Full disclosure: I'm the founder of Pinned, which is one of the Surfer alternatives on this list, so I'm biased. I've tried to rank the others by how well they solve the reasons people actually leave Surfer, and most of them aren't mine.
The short answer: if you liked Surfer's editor and want something cheaper, try Frase. If you want a research suite with a content tool attached, look at Semrush. If you want articles written for as little as possible, Koala AI. If research matters more than writing, Ahrefs. And if you run a Shopify store and want every article staged for approval, that's what Pinned's Business plan is built for.

Why people look for Surfer alternatives
Credit where it's due first. Surfer's Content Editor is still one of the best ways to write against what ranks: live guidelines, a Content Score that now covers Google and AI search citations, and one-click Auto-Optimize. Add keyword research, a Topical Map, a Content Audit, and an AI Tracker across 5 AI surfaces, and it's a strong product. If it works for you, keep it.
The reasons people leave are usually these:
- Price for the volume. Standard is $119 month to month, or $99/month billed yearly, for 360 documents a year. Discovery, the cheapest plan, gives 10 documents a month on monthly billing, and unused limits don't roll over.
- Tracking costs extra. Discovery has no AI prompt tracking, Standard tracks 25 prompts weekly on ChatGPT only, and daily tracking across models starts at Pro, $182/month billed yearly.
- No free plan. The 7-day Pro trial needs a card and converts unless you cancel.
- They wanted articles, not an editor. Surfer helps a writer. Some teams really wanted finished posts published for them.
- No Shopify publishing. Surfer's integrations cover WordPress, Google Docs, Contentful and Zapier. Shopify takes the API, which is on Peace of Mind ($299/month billed yearly) or Enterprise, plus your own code.
1. Pinned
Mine- Best for
- Shopify stores that want articles written and refreshed, with nothing going live until a person approves it
- Price
- Business plan, $100/month per brand or $1,000/year per brand, plus usage on your own AI key; 14-day free trial
- Writes articles
- Yes, for Shopify blogs only, staged as unpublished drafts
Pinned's SEO Tool writes new articles and refreshes old ones from your keywords and Google Search Console data. Every draft is checked against a rulebook for links, sources, structure and banned phrases, then lands in Shopify as an unpublished draft. You approve it, and only then does it go live. It also tracks whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention your brand, and it can auto-translate your store.
The SEO Tool comes with the rest of the Business plan: the social media scheduler, an email campaign builder and 4 AI agents, for up to 10 team members per brand.
The catch: it doesn't replace Surfer's editor. There's no live content score and no keyword research database. The AI runs on your own key (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google or xAI), billed by that provider on top of the plan. And it's Shopify only.
2. Frase
- Best for
- Surfer users who want the same research, write and optimize loop for less
- Price
- Starter $39/month billed yearly or $49 month to month; Professional $103/month billed yearly or $129 month to month
- Writes articles
- Yes: 10 a month on Starter, 40 on Professional, 100 on Scale
Frase covers most of what people use Surfer for. It researches what ranks, drafts in your brand voice with its AI agent, scores pages for SEO and for AI citations, and tracks AI visibility on ChatGPT and Google AI from the Starter plan. Content Guard watches published pages for ranking decay and drafts the fix for you to approve.
It publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, or to its own hosted blog, FraseCMS. Every plan has a 7-day free trial with no card, and Starter stops at its monthly limits instead of billing overage.
The catch: Starter is 1 seat and 1 site, and Shopify isn't one of the publishing targets.
3. Semrush
- Best for
- teams that want AI articles and a full SEO research suite from one company
- Price
- Content Toolkit $60/month; core SEO plans from $139/month, or $117.33/month billed annually
- Writes articles
- Yes: unlimited standard articles, plus 5 SEO-boosted articles a month
Semrush's Content Toolkit is the cheapest way to keep a Surfer-style workflow inside a big SEO brand. For $60/month you get topic ideas, SEO briefs, an AI article generator, a content optimizer, AI images and up to 50 brand voices. It publishes to up to 100 WordPress sites and exports to Google Docs.
When you need research, the core plans add keyword research, backlinks, Position Tracking and Site Audit, and Semrush One adds daily AI prompt tracking. Most plans and toolkits have a 7-day free trial.
The catch: toolkits are billed separately, so research plus content is $199/month month to month. No Shopify publishing.
4. Koala AI
- Best for
- bloggers and stores that want lots of AI articles published for little money
- Price
- Starter $25/month, Professional $49/month, Boost $99/month, month to month (20% off billed yearly)
- Writes articles
- Yes: 45,000 words a month on Starter, 100,000 on Professional
KoalaWriter writes full articles from a keyword, covers the terms the ranking pages share, adds internal links and AI images, and publishes in one click to WordPress, Shopify, Webflow or Ghost. Professional adds a draft editor with an SEO score and a Search Console dashboard. New accounts get 5,000 free words and 25 credits, no card.
The catch: word allowances shrink with premium models (some count words at 2x or 3x), and it's built for volume rather than for a live editor like Surfer's.
5. Ahrefs
- Best for
- people leaving Surfer because they need research: keywords, backlinks and audits
- Price
- Lite $129/month or $1,290/year; Starter $29/month for basic research; Content Kit add-on from $99/month
- Writes articles
- Content Kit add-on guides and grades your writing
Ahrefs is the research pick. Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker and Brand Radar for AI visibility are in every main plan; Lite includes 750 tracked keywords and 5 tracked AI prompts. The Content Kit add-on helps you match search intent and refine a draft against competitors.
The catch: no free trial, and Ahrefs says it never runs discounts. Ahrefs Free gives site owners limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit for their own site.
My pick
Most people leaving Surfer should start with Frase: it's the closest match, it's cheaper, and the trial needs no card. If your team already pays for an SEO suite, or wants one, move content into Semrush's Content Toolkit. If you mostly want volume, Koala AI. If the real gap was research, Ahrefs.
Pick Pinned only if you run a Shopify store and want articles that wait for your approval, with social and email in the same app. That's a narrow fit, and I'd rather say so than sell it to the wrong person.
What I'd do today
- Write down the one job you used Surfer for most: editing with a score, generating drafts, tracking AI answers, or research. That decides the replacement.
- Export the Content Editor documents you want to keep before your billing period ends.
- Run a free trial of the closest match. Frase's 7-day trial and Koala AI's 5,000 free words both cost nothing and need no card.
- If you run a Shopify store, start Pinned's 14-day free trial and approve your first drafted article.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest good alternative to Surfer?
For writing, Koala AI starts at $25/month and Frase at $39/month billed yearly, both well under Surfer's Standard plan at $99/month billed yearly. Frase is closer to Surfer's research and scoring workflow, while Koala AI is built to produce many articles quickly. Both let you try before paying: Frase has a 7-day trial without a card, and Koala AI gives new accounts 5,000 free words.
Which Surfer alternative can publish to Shopify?
Koala AI publishes to Shopify in one click, along with WordPress, Webflow and Ghost. Pinned publishes only to Shopify, and stages each article as an unpublished draft that goes live after a person approves it. Frase publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix, and Semrush's Content Toolkit to WordPress. Surfer itself reaches Shopify only through its API, which needs your own code.
Is Semrush better than Surfer for content?
It depends on how you write. Surfer's editor is more focused on guiding a writer with a live score, and plans start at $49/month billed yearly. Semrush's Content Toolkit is $60/month with unlimited standard articles, briefs and an optimizer, and it sits next to the research tools if you buy them. If you edit by hand, Surfer. If you want generated drafts plus research, Semrush.
Can Pinned replace Surfer completely?
No, and I won't pretend it can. Pinned has no live content editor, no content score and no keyword research database. It writes and refreshes Shopify articles from your keywords and Search Console data, checks them against a rulebook and waits for your approval. If you rely on Surfer's editor or research, keep Surfer or move to Frase. Pinned only fits Shopify stores.
