Pinned vs Semrush: an honest comparison for Shopify stores (2026)

By The Pinned team · Updated October 29, 2026 · 8 min read

Full disclosure: I build Pinned, so read this knowing I have a stake in it. Pinned vs Semrush is a lopsided comparison, and I'll say so up front: Semrush is a full SEO research suite and Pinned is not. If you need keyword data, backlink analysis, rank tracking or site audits, use Semrush, or a suite like it.

The two only meet on content. Semrush sells a Content Toolkit that writes and optimizes articles, and tracks how AI answers mention your brand. Pinned's SEO Tool, part of our Business plan, writes and refreshes blog articles for Shopify stores, stages each one as an unpublished draft, and publishes only after a person approves it. That narrow job is the only place where Pinned can be the better pick.

How Semrush is sold now

If you remember Semrush plans called Pro, Guru and Business, those names are gone from the pricing page. Today there's a core plan with the SEO Toolkit in four tiers. SEO is $139/month month to month, or $117.33/month billed annually. Then come 3 "SEO + AI Search" tiers, sold as Semrush One, which add the AI Visibility Toolkit: Starter at $199 ($165.17 billed annually), Pro+ at $299 ($248.17) and Advanced at $549 ($455.67). A free plan gives you 1 demo project and 10 reports a day.

Everything else is a specialist toolkit you add and pay for separately: Content at $60/month, AI Visibility at $99/month per domain when bought alone, plus Local, Social, Advertising, Traffic & Market and AI PR. Extra users start at $45/month on plans with the SEO Toolkit. Annual billing saves up to 17% and is paid up front. Semrush's help center page on subscriptions lays it all out.

Research suite versus content workflow

Semrush answers questions: which keywords matter, who ranks for them, which pages on your site are broken, how often AI answers cite you or your competitors. You still decide what to do, and someone still does it. The Content Toolkit closes part of that gap by generating articles and publishing them to WordPress.

Pinned does one job end to end for one platform. It drafts from your keywords and Google Search Console data, checks every draft against a rulebook (links, sources, structure, banned phrases), stages it in Shopify unpublished, and waits for your approval. It has no keyword database, no backlink tool, no rank tracker suite and no SERP content editor, and I'm not planning to pretend otherwise.

Pinned is a web app for creators and small brands. The SEO Tool is one piece of the Business plan, which also includes the social media scheduler, an email campaign builder, and 4 AI agents that draft and propose but never publish on their own. The SEO Manager agent handles site audits, keyword strategy, content refreshes and internal links.

Beyond writing, the SEO Tool tracks whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention your brand, and it can auto-translate a Shopify store's content.

The catch: you connect your own AI key (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google or xAI) and pay that provider for usage. Publishing is Shopify only. And Pinned is a small, founder-led company, far smaller than Semrush.

2. Semrush

Best for
marketers, SEO specialists and agencies who need research, tracking and audits across sites
Price
Free plan; SEO from $139/month or $117.33/month billed annually; Content Toolkit $60/month extra
Publishes to
WordPress (up to 100 sites), with Google Docs export

The core plans cover keyword research, competitor analysis, backlink analysis, Position Tracking and Site Audit. Semrush One adds AI visibility across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, with prompts tracked daily: 50 on Starter, 100 on Pro+, 200 on Advanced. Content optimization in the core plans starts at Pro+.

The Content Toolkit is the part that overlaps with Pinned. For $60/month you get unlimited standard AI articles, 5 SEO-boosted articles a month (10 more cost $30/month), topic ideas, SEO briefs, an optimizer, AI images and up to 50 brand voices. It publishes to WordPress, exports to Google Docs, and repurposes articles for Mailchimp and Semrush's Social Poster.

The catch: costs stack, since toolkits and extra users are billed separately. Trials take a card and disable exports. Shopify isn't among the Content Toolkit's publishing integrations.

Where Semrush is better

  • Research depth. Keywords, competitors, backlinks and site audits. Pinned doesn't do any of this as a database you can query.
  • Rank tracking. 500 to 5,000 keywords tracked daily depending on the plan. Pinned has no rank tracker suite.
  • Scale. 5 to 40 monitored websites, MCP access from Starter, API data on Advanced, and Enterprise above that.
  • AI visibility detail. Prompt research, competitor comparisons and sentiment. Pinned tells you whether the main answer engines mention your brand.
  • Cheaper articles on WordPress. The Content Toolkit is $60/month with the AI included. Pinned is $100/month plus your model bill, and doesn't publish to WordPress.
  • A real free plan. 10 reports a day costs nothing.

Where Pinned is better

  • Shopify publishing with approval. Articles arrive in your store as unpublished drafts and go live when you approve them.
  • A rulebook on every draft. Each draft is checked for links, sources, structure and banned phrases before you see it.
  • Refreshes from your own data. Older articles get updated from your Search Console data, through the same approval step.
  • The rest of your marketing. Social scheduling, email campaigns you send through Klaviyo or paste into any email platform, and AI agents, for one price per brand with up to 10 team members.
  • Less to learn. If all you want is a fresh blog, you skip a research suite built for SEO professionals.

Pricing compared

A Shopify owner who wants articles and some research: Semrush SEO plus the Content Toolkit is $139 + $60 = $199/month month to month, and you paste each article into Shopify yourself. Pinned Business is $100/month per brand plus AI usage, with Shopify drafts, social and email included, but no research suite.

A small team that also needs AI tracking: Semrush Starter is $199/month ($165.17 billed annually), plus $45/month or more for each extra user and $60/month for content. Pinned Business covers up to 10 team members for $100/month per brand, plus the model bill.

My pick

Pick Semrush if SEO is a real channel for you: if you research keywords, watch competitors, track rankings, audit a site or run client accounts. Most people who search for this comparison are in that group, and Pinned won't replace it. The free plan is a fine way to start.

Pick Pinned if you run a Shopify store, research isn't your bottleneck, and you'd rather approve finished articles than write them, with your social posts and email in the same place. Plenty of stores can do well with both: Semrush for research, Pinned to write and refresh the posts.

Frequently asked questions

Is Semrush too expensive for a small Shopify store?

It depends on what you use. The free plan gives 1 demo project and 10 reports a day. Paid plans start at $139/month, or $117.33/month billed annually, and the Content Toolkit is another $60/month. If you mostly need blog posts rather than research, that's a lot of tool. If organic search is a main channel, it's worth testing with the 7-day trial.

Can Semrush publish blog posts to Shopify?

Not directly, as far as I could find. The Content Toolkit publishes to WordPress, up to 100 sites, exports to Google Docs, and pushes repurposed content to Mailchimp and Semrush's Social Poster. Shopify isn't among the publishing integrations in Semrush's help center. You can still write in Semrush and paste the finished article into your Shopify blog by hand.

Does Pinned do keyword research like Semrush?

No. Pinned isn't a keyword research database, a backlink tool or a rank tracker. It writes and refreshes Shopify articles from keywords you give it and your Google Search Console data, and its SEO Manager agent proposes a keyword strategy and runs site audits. If you need search volumes, competitor keywords or backlink data, you need a research tool such as Semrush.

What does Pinned cost with the AI key included?

Business is $100/month per brand, or $1,000/year, after a 14-day free trial. The SEO Tool runs on a model key you connect from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google or xAI, and that provider bills you separately for usage. I can't give a fixed total, since it depends on the model and how many articles you generate. Semrush's prices include its AI.
