The SEO Manager is the agent that looks after your blog's search performance. Its four tasks check your site for problems, find keywords you're missing, pick articles to refresh and suggest links between your pages. Use it when you want a short list of what to fix or write next.

Note

Available on the Business plan.

Nothing changes on your site or in the SEO Tool until you click. Anything that touches an article waits for your approval in the SEO Tool.

Before you start

  • Set up the SEO Tool with a brand. See Set up the SEO Tool. The Content Refresher and Internal Linker need it. The SEO Audit can run without it if you give your site URL. The Keyword Strategist can also work from your niche or site URL in Agent settings.
  • Connect a language model for the SEO Audit, Keyword Strategist and Content Refresher. See Connect your own AI model. The Internal Linker doesn't use one.
  • Connect Google Search Console for the Content Refresher. See Connect Search Console and set a publishing schedule.

Open the SEO Manager

  1. In the sidebar, click Agents.

  2. Click the SEO Manager tab.

  3. On the task you want, click Run. A form opens with that task's options.

Manual runs are limited to 15 a day, and each run takes about two minutes at most. For the run page, the run statuses and deleting runs, see Run and schedule agent tasks.

Audit your site

The SEO Audit checks a sample of your pages for broken links, thin pages, missing titles and descriptions, missing or repeated headings, slow responses, images without alt text and missing canonical links. It also checks that links between your pages work. It ends with a short list of fixes in order of importance.

  1. On the SEO Audit card, click Run.
  2. If you have a brand, choose it under Brand. If you have no brand yet, type your address in Site URL. Adding it in Agent settings saves you typing it next time.
  3. In Pages to check, enter how many pages to look at. The default is 20 and the most is 40. More pages means a longer run.
  4. Click Run audit.

When the run finishes, open it to read the report. Each finding has a Mark handled button you can click once you've fixed it.

If Search Console isn't connected, the audit skips rankings and keyword cannibalization, and the report says so. Cannibalization means two of your pages compete for the same search.

Find keyword gaps

The Keyword Strategist compares what you rank for with what your competitors publish, and lists searches you don't cover yet. Each gap shows its intent, a priority, the reason and a topic group.

  1. On the Keyword Strategist card, click Run.
  2. Choose your brand under Brand.
  3. Under Competitor sites, add up to 4 blog or site URLs. They start filled in from Agent settings.
  4. Optionally, type a topic in Topic (optional) to narrow the results.
  5. In How many keywords, enter a number from 1 to 40. The default is 20.
  6. Click Find gaps.

On the run page, click Add to backlog on a gap to add it to your brand's keyword list in the SEO Tool, or Add all to add every gap. Then you can write articles for them. See Manage your SEO keywords. A run made without an SEO brand offers Copy list instead.

Phrases proposed in earlier runs aren't proposed again.

Refresh articles that are slipping

The Content Refresher picks published articles that are losing clicks, or sitting just off page one of Google, and suggests an angle for each rewrite. It reads your Search Console data, so it needs Search Console connected in the SEO Tool, with a property set for each brand.

  1. On the Content Refresher card, click Run.
  2. Under Brand, choose one brand or All brands.
  3. Click Find candidates.

On the run page, each pick shows the reason, the numbers behind it and a suggested angle. Click Queue refresh to send it to the SEO Tool. The rewritten version waits there for your approval, like any other draft. Only published articles can be refreshed. See Write, review and publish blog posts.

An article that was proposed or dismissed in the last 30 days isn't suggested again.

The Internal Linker suggests links from your new articles to your products, collections and other pages. It also points out pages that few articles link to. It doesn't use a language model.

  1. On the Internal Linker card, click Run.
  2. Choose your brand under Brand, or All brands.
  3. Under Article, leave Recent posts (last 14 days) to cover everything published in the last two weeks, or pick one article.
  4. Click Suggest links.

A run covers up to 10 articles and suggests up to 5 links per article. On the run page, you can narrow the links you want, then click Propose links. The links are written into the article through the SEO Tool, where you still approve the change. See Keep your product catalog and internal links in shape.

Run tasks on a schedule

Each SEO Manager card has a Schedule switch. The SEO Audit, Keyword Strategist and Content Refresher can run at most weekly. The Internal Linker can run at most daily. For cadence, weekday and hour settings, and for what happens when a schedule pauses, see Run and schedule agent tasks.

Troubleshooting

The Content Refresher says to connect Search Console

Connect Google Search Console in the SEO Tool's Settings, then run it again. If you chose a single brand, that brand also needs its own Search Console property.

The Content Refresher or Internal Linker says to set up the SEO Tool

Both need a brand in the SEO Tool. Follow Set up the SEO Tool, then run the task again.

The Keyword Strategist asks for your niche, site URL or a topic

The task needs something to work from. Add your niche or site URL in Agent settings, or type a topic in Topic (optional), then run it again.

The Internal Linker can't add links to my article

The article must already be staged in your Shopify store. Check that it's published or waiting in the SEO Tool, then run it again.

The run finds nothing

This is normal when everything is already covered. The Keyword Strategist finds no gaps your keyword list lacks. The Internal Linker finds no new articles in the last 14 days. The Content Refresher finds no articles losing ground, or only ones it already suggested.
